ABOUT THE PREMIER O SCALE FISH BELLY HOPPER CAR

Unlike equipment that carried a variety of loads, like boxcars, flatcars, and gondolas, this two-bay hopper was designed specifically for one cargo: anthracite coal on railroads of the eastern seaboard. Its capacity matched the volume of coal that a pair of typical 50-ton freight trucks could carry. And its “fishbelly” slope sheets — the angled floors at either end of the car — were set at precisely the angle at which coal would flow easily from its bottom doors. (Covered grain hoppers, for example, require much steeper slope sheets.)

The two-bay car was ideal for delivery of clean-burning anthracite to coal dealers who served the home heating market. In contrast, dirtier-burning bituminous coal, used more commonly by large industrial customers, often traveled in bigger three- and four-bay hoppers.

ABOUT THE RAILKING SW1500 DIESEL SWITCHER

The end-cab switcher was the advance guard of the diesel revolution, working its way onto Class 1 rosters before road diesels were even considered. Compared with the 0-6-0 and 0-8-0 steamers they replaced, the advantages of diesel switchers were obvious: near-instant start-up and shut down, compared with building a fire and later dumping the ashes; and 360-degree visibility in the chaos of the yards and industrial settings where switchers typically worked. From the engineer’s point of view, the new diesels were cleaner, safer, and easier to operate.

At 1500 horsepower, the SW1500 was the last and most powerful of EMD’s SW line of switchers, which traced its roots back to the SW1 of 1939 — when “S” stood for six hundred horsepower, “W” stood for welded frame, and the pre-GM company name was Electro-Motive Corporation. The SW 1500 and its 1000 hp sibling, the SW1000, were the first switchers delivered with EMD’s second-generation model 645 diesel motor. Visually, the only difference between the two was the second exhaust stack on the SW1500 for its 12-cylinder prime mover.

While it sold quite well, with 808 units delivered from 1966–1974, the SW1500 was born into a declining market for purpose-built switchers. EMD’s best-selling Geeps had popularized the do-anything, go-anywhere road switcher concept, and railroads were quick to see the advantage of road engines that could double as switchers when needed. Recognizing this, the designers of the SW1500 conceived what was almost a mini road switcher, giving its crew the all-around visibility of a switcher, but with a beefier, higher-riding body than earlier SW models, more power, and the option of smoother-riding Flexicoil trucks.

ABOUT THE PREMIER O SCALE 40’ AAR BOX CAR

The 40’ steel boxcar so familiar to model railroaders was a product of the 1930s. Wood box cars, which were built into the World War I era, and early steel cars were largely non-standardized, with details varying from railroad to railroad. The move toward standardization began with American Railway Association (ARA) designs of 1923 and 1932. It culminated in the 1937 AAR box car, the prototype for this Premier model, which was adopted by railroads from coast to coast and built in the tens of thousands. (The AAR (American Association of Railroads) was and still is the successor to the ARA.)

While the original paint schemes were usually drab variations on standard box car red, new schemes in the 1950s and later brought color back to the American freight train. Our models replicate many of the most fondly remembered paint schemes seen on these cars.

ABOUT THE PREMIER O SCALE 70-TON 3-BAY HOPPER

Unlike equipment that carried a variety of loads, like boxcars, flatcars, and gondolas, this 3-bay hopper was designed specifically for one cargo: bituminous coal. Its capacity matched the volume of coal that a pair of typical 70-ton freight trucks could carry. And its slope sheets — the angled floors at either end of the car — were set at precisely the angle at which coal would flow easily from its bottom doors. (Covered grain hoppers, for example, require much steeper slope sheets.)

The large 3-bay car was ideal for delivery of bituminous coal to large industrial customers and railroads. In contrast, cleaner-burning anthracite coal shipped more commonly to small, local coal dealers who served the home heating market, often traveled in smaller 2-bay hoppers.

ABOUT THE PREMIER 40′ REEFER CAR

The coming of the railroad changed the way America ate and drank. Before the iron horse connected every town of any importance to the outside world, most food was grown or produced locally. The arrival of cheap, fast, refrigerated transport — in the form of the woodsided reefer with ice bunkers at each end — enabled local brewers, dairies, meat processors, and other food businesses to become players on a national scale. Among other things, the reefer enabled Chicago to become “Hog Butcher for the World”; in pre-reefer days, livestock had been transported to local markets and butchered as close as possible to the final consumer.

In the 19th Century, ice for reefers was harvested from frozen ponds each winter and stored as well as possible in insulated icehouses. The advent of mechanical ice-making around 1900 greatly increased the capacity of the reefer fleet, which at its height consumed over one million tons of ice annually. Since loaded cars needed to be re-iced about once per day, icing stations were erected around the country on shipping routes that could be as long as coast-to-coast.

Car No. 13
MSRP: $359.95

ABOUT THE RAILKING SW-1 DIESEL SWITCHER

The birth of the SW1 in January 1939 was a historic moment for the Electro-Motive Corporation. The tiny switcher (“S” for six hundred horsepower, “W” for welded frame) was EMC’s first truly mass-produced loco, the first with Electro-Motive’s own electrical gear, and the first mass-produced engine powered by the 567 diesel motor – which would become the backbone of first-generation American diesel power. Popular with railroads large and small, the SW1 stayed in production for 15 years, and many remained in service for three or more decades.

Our RailKing Scale SW1 offers Premier level details at a RailKing price. Separately added metal detail parts include front, side, and rear handrails; bell and horn; grab irons to allow access to the top of the hood, and handles for the sandbox lid on the front pilot (which doubled as a convenient seat for yard brakemen). Built to full 1/48 scale proportions, this model also offers authentic, legible EMD builder’s plates and directionally operating front and rear headlights. Single or dual exhaust stacks, per individual prototypes, are also featured.
